Set up sales tax

Choose how to calculate sales tax. You can keep local rates in FlintPOS or connect TaxJar. Check the result before you take a payment.

Where to find it

Open Settings > Tax Rates. Use the guided setup first for a new store. Then edit the saved jurisdiction rows when rates change.

Product locationSettings > Tax Rates

Before you start

Use an admin account or a manager account with tax access. Get the right rates and dates from your tax adviser or official tax notices. Have the state, county, and city details ready.

Set up local tax rates

  1. Open Settings > Tax Rates. If TaxJar is connected and on, use the TaxJar guide.
  2. Start Sales Tax Setup. Choose the state and the accounting method your business uses.
  3. Choose Boundary Type. This sets how FlintPOS matches an address to a tax area. Enter the county where needed.
  4. Add the cities or towns and their rates. Use Add another municipality in county when you need another row.
  5. Add a Special Tax only when your business needs that tax.
  6. Check each percentage and its start and end dates. Choose Save and Verify. Then Complete Tax Setup.
  7. Build an order for a known address. Check the tax before you collect payment.

Use a customer tax document

  1. Open the customer. Set Resale or Tax Exempt and enter the needed number.
  2. On Tax documents, choose the matching document type and its scope: Blanket or Transaction-specific.
  3. Enter the effective date and required expiration date. The effective date cannot be in the future or after the expiration date. Upload the matching file.
  4. For a Transaction-specific document, link it to the same customer's open order in POS or Tablet POS. It stays taxable until linked. You cannot add a new link to a completed, delivered, void, or canceled order.
  5. Check the order tax before checkout.

A file alone does not make a sale tax exempt. A current Blanket document can cover eligible orders for that customer. An expired document no longer covers an order and tax applies. An admin or manager may use an expired-document override in POS or Tablet POS for one order when offered. The override needs a reason and does not renew the document.

Admins and managers may choose Delete unused upload only when no order link, tax override, or completed-sale evidence uses the file. If it is linked or used, choose Revoke to keep its history. To renew or correct a used document, upload a new version and keep the old history. Legacy documents cannot be deleted. Completed sales keep their saved tax evidence.

Check the result

Eligible orders use the saved jurisdiction and effective rates when local Tax Rates is active. Tax-exempt or non-taxable products follow their product and customer tax settings, while the tax report shows the set up math.

Troubleshooting

  • If the wizard cannot continue, complete the state, county, boundary, and needed rate fields or choose the explicit no-rates path.
  • If the wrong municipality is chosen, correct the address and jurisdiction values. Then test an order at a known address.
  • If a rate appears twice, check overlapping effective dates and duplicate municipality rows.
  • If TaxJar is connected and enabled, review Taxes Integration. Local Tax Rates is not available in that state.
